The Los Penasquitos Preserve waterfall is a hidden gem of San Diego and a popular spot for locals within the area. The hike to the waterfall lies within a preserve of approximately 4,000 acres. There are many different trailheads that lead to the waterfall all offering a unique experience. Here is a map of the preserve. I always start at the Park Village Park trailhead because there is always plenty of parking and it is a fairly short and easy hike from this point.
This is a fairly flat and straight trail making it an easy hike
Hiking this trail on gloomy days make me feel like I'm in a book
Once you're near the waterfall, the trail starts to get a lot of rocky. To the left of this area, there is poison oak so beware.
The top of the waterfall! It may just look like a stream at first but if you venture your way down you'll start to see some water trickle in what appears to be small waterfalls. In the summer time, you'll often see people wading in the calm water you see on the right.
This is where you'll really be able to see the waterfall. But I'll admit I had to climb and scale some rocks to get to this area.
Tried to get some slow shutter shots but had to leave my tripod behind because it was too hard to get to this spot with it.
On the way, you'll see a sign pointing to Carson's crossing and if you follow it you'll find beautiful sycamore trees and a nice little crossing bridge.
I love stopping by this spot on the way back from the hike because it's just so calm and peaceful.
There are tons of parking spots when you start from Park Village and the trailhead is very easily located.
This is a very easy straight and flat trail. It is very well maintained making it safe for dogs and families. It is important to make note that there are ticks present in this area so upon finishing the trail always check your dogs and children for ticks. There is also poison oak and rattlesnakes among this trail to be aware of.
This is the address for the parking village trailhead, but there are plenty other trailheads you can start from which can be found on this map.
