I go to Hawaii almost every year since I was about 10 (I'm now 21). But before my most recent trip which was last August I had never done a hike in Hawaii! I honestly never even knew about any hikes in Hawaii until instagram and GoPro came along. I got my first GoPro 2 years ago and upon getting it I spent hours going through the hashtag #gopro on instagram. Through that hashtag I was able to find sooooo many awesome things to do in Hawaii that I never even knew about. The Lanikai pillbox hike is one of those things that really caught my eye and was determined to do. So one early morning my parents and I woke up at the crack of dawn and headed over to Kailua to embark on this trail.
Parking & Location
There is no parking lot, the only parking is parking that you can find on the side of the road. The start of the trail is in-between two houses but it's not hard to find because there is a nice sign that let's you know you've found the spot.
The first part of the trail is honestly the hardest because it is so steep and can get a little muddy. But after that first initial incline it get's easier and you begin to see the amazing view as you continue walking up.To get up to the first pillbox only takes about 20 minutes and the view is wonderful! But if you want to keep going there are two other pillboxes. I only went up to the second one and I've heard that the third is hard to find. I think this is a fairly easy hike. We saw a lady with a baby carrier on hiking up to the pillboxes so if she can do it...you can do it!
Because we went so early in the morning it was really gloomy but even though it was gloomy it was still beautiful. I've noticed though that if you go later in the day you'll be able to catch the view when the water is super vibrant and blue but you'll be stuck suffering the heat. Regardless this is a great hike & is definitely one that you should go on if you are ever on the island of Oahu.
